Ian Hamilton Munro (Munners) joined the Blues in 1950 and was a long-time Blues official and supporter and a Life Member of MUFC… His main contribution to University Football was off the field where he served as MUFC Secretary, Treasurer and President (1972).
Munners was Team Manager for numerous Intervarsity teams and was named Intervarsity Manager in the ‘MUFC Officials of the Modern Era’.
Later in his footballing “career”, Munners became a VAFA Match-day Official and was diligent in monitoring the door to afternoon tea… making sure that his Blues people were made welcome. But above all, Munners was a “champion” of University Sport and in particular Football, always putting University Football ahead of other pursuits.
Ian was part of the successful University Juniors VAFA Under 19 Premiership in 1958 and his cohort have been celebrating ever since, with regular reunions and lunches, where the main fare was friendship and camaraderie.
When Munners passed in early 2019 his cohort decided that an appropriate recognition of Munners would be the creation of a memorial trophy to be played for between Blues and Blacks Under 19s.
In recent times both sides have been in different grades of the Under 19 competition, but today we finally had the opportunity to contest The Munners Cup.
As it turned out, Blues Unders proved a bit to strong for the Blacks and ran out victors; 15-14-104 to 5-4-34.
Andrew Donald (MUFC President and part of the Munners Cohort) conducted the presentation of the Cup to winning captain, Oscar Dowling.
